The Big Bash League (BBL), officially known as the KFC Big Bash League due to sponsorship, is an Australian professional T20 cricket league that started in 2011. It replaced the older KFC Twenty20 Big Bash and introduced eight city-based teams, expanding from the previous six state teams. KFC has sponsored the league since its beginning. By the 2016/17 season, the BBL was one of the top two T20 leagues globally in terms of average attendance, alongside the Indian Premier League. In the 2023/2024 season, the Brisbane Heat won the BBL 13 title, defeating the Sydney Sixers by 54 runs in the final.
BBL matches occur in Australia during the summer months of December, January, and February. Of the eight teams, six have won the title at least once. The Perth Scorchers are the most successful, with five championships, including two consecutive wins on two occasions. The Sydney Sixers have claimed the title thrice, with two straight wins. The Brisbane Heat has won twice, while the Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Thunder have each won once.
Before 2014, the top two teams from the BBL qualified for the Champions League Twenty20, an international competition featuring top domestic teams from various countries. The Champions League Twenty20 ended after the 2014 season.
2011, a design contest was held to create the Big Bash League trophy. The competition was open exclusively to Australian designers. From a shortlist of three designs, the final winner was selected through a public vote, with the winning design unveiled on December 13, 2011.
In 2011, there were plans to expand the Big Bash League (BBL) into regions not currently served by international cricket. Initially set for 2012, the proposed expansion included Newcastle, Canberra, Geelong, and Gold Coast teams, with a potential New Zealand team based in Auckland or Christchurch. However, the expansion was put on hold due to insufficient cricket facilities in these cities.
In 2015, Stephen Fleming, former Black Caps captain and Melbourne Stars coach, proposed including New Zealand teams to create a trans-Tasman competition. Daniel Vettori, Brisbane Heat coach and former Black Caps captain, and Stuart Coventry, Melbourne Renegades’ chief executive, supported this idea. They also advocated for adding a fifth home game for each club.
By 2016, Anthony Everard, head of the BBL, suggested a gradual approach to expansion. He proposed hosting BBL games in regional markets like Canberra, Geelong, Launceston, Gold Coast, and Alice Springs before adding new teams after the 2017–18 season. On January 27, 2017, Everard announced that eight additional matches would be added to the 2017–18 season, with plans to explore new markets. However, this was not fully implemented until the 2018–19 season.
In 2018, the Gold Coast Suns expressed interest in acquiring a BBL franchise if the league expanded.
On January 19, 2014, Belinda Clark, former women’s Test captain and Head of Brisbane’s Centre of Excellence, announced that planning for a women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) was underway and could become a reality soon. This move was driven by the significant increase in TV ratings during the 2013–14 season and growing interest in women’s cricket.
On February 19, 2015, Cricket Australia officially launched the WBBL for the 2015–16 season. The league featured teams that mirrored the men’s BBL teams: two teams each from Sydney and Melbourne and one team each from Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, and Perth.
The first WBBL title was won by the Sydney Thunder, who defeated the Sydney Sixers by 3 wickets. The most recent champion from the 2022–23 season is the Adelaide Strikers, who secured their first WBBL title by beating the Sydney Thunder by 10 runs.
The Perth Scorchers have won the Big Bash League title five times, while the Sydney Sixers have won it three times. Both teams have achieved consecutive title wins. The Scorchers have reached the final eight times, making them the most frequent finalists.
Out of the eight teams in the BBL, six have won the title at least once. The Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Stars are the only teams that have reached the final more than once without securing a championship. The Sydney Thunder won their title in the 2015–16 season, the Adelaide Strikers in the 2017–18 season, and the Melbourne Renegades in the 2018–19 season.
