Mzansi Super League: Championship History and Key Teams

The Mzansi Super League (MSL) was a Twenty20 (T20) cricket competition held in South Africa. Established by Cricket South Africa (CSA) in 2018, it was created to replace the unsuccessful T20 Global League. The MSL ran for two seasons before being canceled in favor of the new SA20 competition starting in the 2022/23 season.

The inaugural MSL season took place from November to December 2018, and all matches were broadcast domestically by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) on free-to-air channels. The league featured six franchise teams representing different cities across South Africa. The competition was paused in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and did not resume. Despite plans for structural changes in South African domestic cricket announced in 2021, the MSL was ultimately discontinued.

League structure

In the Mzansi Super League (MSL), each team competed against every other team twice in a round-robin format, with matches held both at home and away. At the end of the league phase, the top three teams on the points table advanced to the playoffs. The team that finished first after the league stage earned a spot in the final and had the advantage of playing as the home side. The second and third-placed teams faced off in a playoff match, with the winner of that game moving on to compete against the top team in the final. Player draft

In the Mzansi Super League (MSL), franchises acquired players through a draft system. The salaries of these players were determined based on the round in which they were drafted, with earlier rounds typically commanding higher salaries.
