The Hundred League History and Key Teams Achievement

The Hundred is a 100-ball cricket tournament featuring teams from major cities across England and Wales. Launched by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2021, the tournament is designed so that each match lasts about two-and-a-half hours. The BBC provides free-to-air broadcasts of the games, and all women’s matches, along with some men’s matches, can be streamed for free on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel.

Most matches are played as double-headers at the same venue on the same day, allowing fans to watch both the men’s and women’s games with a single ticket. While the men’s players earn four times more than the women’s players, the prize money for the tournament is equal for both genders.

The Hundred History

In September 2016, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) proposed a new city-based Twenty20 cricket competition similar to the Indian Premier League. After discussions and a vote among the 18 first-class counties, the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the proposal was approved with a 16–3 vote. On April 26, 2017, the ECB’s members confirmed the decision with a 38–3 vote to move forward with the competition.

Initially, the tournament was set to follow the traditional Twenty20 format. Still, in October 2017, ECB chief commercial officer Sanjay Patel proposed a 100-ball format to make the game more accessible and appealing to new audiences. The tournament, aimed at boosting investment in the women’s regional structure and providing valuable experience for domestic players, was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The financial success of The Hundred has been debated. A 2016 Deloitte report predicted annual profits of around £27 million. However, the ECB reported an £11.8 million profit in 2022, while a 2023 report by Fanos Hira and ECB chairman Richard Thompson revealed a £9 million loss in the first two years. These figures do not account for the £24.7 million promised to counties and the MCC. Despite this, ECB chief executive Richard Gould has expressed confidence in the tournament’s future beyond its current Sky Sports deal, which runs until 2028.

For its third season, The Hundred announced a collaboration with Marvel Comics. Marvel characters like Hulk, Iron Man, and Black Panther are featured in digital content with players from all eight teams, aiming to attract new fans to the competition.

The Hundred Format

One-hundred-ball cricket, a format used in The Hundred competition, involves two teams, each playing a single innings of 100 balls. Each game lasts about two and a half hours.

Critical rules for One-hundred-ball cricket include:

• Intervals:
  • There are two innings, each usually lasting 65 minutes, separated by a 15-minute break.
  • If the first innings ends early, the break happens immediately.
  • If there are delays, the break is shortened to 10 minutes.
• Innings:
  • Each team bats for 100 balls, not overs.
  • A team can bat until all 100 balls are bowled, or they are all out.
  • The fielding side can take one 90-second strategic time-out, but not during the first 25 balls.
• Overs:
  • An over consists of five balls.
  • Two overs are bowled from each end alternately, with batters staying at the same end between overs.
  • A bowler can change ends but can bowl up to two consecutive overs.
• No Ball:
  • A no-ball incurs a two-run penalty.
  • The following delivery is a free hit, where the batter cannot be out by conventional means except for run-out.
• Fielding:
  • At most, five fielders can be on the leg side.
  • During the first five balls (powerplay), only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.
• Timed Out:
  • A new batter must be ready to face the next ball within 60 seconds after the previous batter’s dismissal.
  • If this is not met, the umpire will issue a warning.
  • Five penalty runs are awarded to the fielding side for a repeated delay.
  • If the batter is not ready within 80 seconds, they will be timed out.

The Hundred Tournament Structure

The Hundred features eight city-based teams that compete during the school summer holidays. All matches for both men and women are held on the same day at the same venues. The league stage consists of 32 matches, with each team playing eight games—four at home and four away. Each team faces every other team once and plays an additional match against their nearest regional rival. The Championship history is determined by the team that finishes at the top of the league, who advances directly to the final, while the second and third-placed teams compete in the Eliminator for a spot in the final.
