The T20 Blast, called the Vitality Due to sponsorship, is a top-level Twenty20 cricket competition in England and Wales. It involves first-class county teams from both countries and was created by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2003.
Over the years, the competition has had different names depending on its sponsors. From 2003 to 2009, it was known as the Twenty20 Cup. Between 2010 and 2013, it was called the Friends Provident t20 and Friends Life t20. Then, from 2014 to 2017, it was named the Natwest t20 Blast. Since 2018, it has been sponsored by the insurance company Vitality and is currently known as the Vitality Blast.
When the Benson & Hedges Cup ended in 2002, the ECB wanted a new one-day competition to attract younger fans and boost declining attendance and sponsorship. They aimed to create a fast and exciting version of cricket that would appeal to those who found the traditional, longer formats less engaging.
The ECB’s marketing manager, Stuart Robertson, suggested a game with 20 overs per inning. He presented the idea to county chairpersons in 2001, who voted 11–7 in favor of the new format. The first Twenty20 Cup took place in 2003 and was promoted with the slogan “I don’t like cricket, I love it,” a line from the song “Dreadlock Holiday” by 10cc.
The first official Twenty20 Cup matches were played on 13 June 2003. The inaugural season was a success, with the Surrey Lions defeating the Warwickshire Bears by nine wickets to claim the first-ever Twenty20 Cup title. On 15 July 2004, a match between Middlesex and Surrey at Lord’s drew a crowd of 26,500—the largest attendance for any county cricket game outside of a one-day final since 1953. The tournament was highly competitive, producing six winners in its first seven years.
By the end of 2009, the ECB planned to expand the T20 format with a more considerable competition called the Twenty20 English Premier League. The league was set to feature 18 county teams and two overseas teams, divided into two divisions with promotion and relegation, inspired by the success of the Indian Premier League and Allen Stanford’s Stanford Super Series in the Caribbean. However, after Stanford’s series collapsed, the plans were abandoned. Instead, the ECB introduced the Clydesdale Bank 40, a modified 40-over league.
The Friends Provident T20, later renamed the FriendsLife T20 after just one season, was introduced in 2010. The competition initially split the 18 counties into North and South groups. Still, it returned to the earlier format of three divisions with six teams each. During this time, Leicestershire and Hampshire emerged as the most successful teams. In 2013, Northants also made headlines by winning their first trophy in 20 years.
In 2014, NatWest became the tournament’s sponsor, continuing the bank’s long-standing connection with county cricket. That year, the game drew a record of 700,000 spectators, the highest attendance in history. The Birmingham Bears, representing Warwickshire County Cricket Club in Twenty20 cricket, won the 2014 title, marking the first time a team claimed a county trophy using a city name. The final champions under this sponsorship in 2017 were the Notts Outlaws.
Vitality became the tournament sponsor in 2018 with an initial four-year deal, and the competition was renamed the Vitality Blast. The most recent edition, the 2023 Vitality Blast, marked the 20th season of domestic Twenty20 cricket in England and Wales. The tournament ran from 20 May to 15 July 2023, with Somerset emerging as the champions.
Eighteen teams compete in the Vitality Blast, divided into two groups of nine. Each team plays 14 group-stage matches, facing six teams twice (home and away) and two once (either home or away). The top four teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals, with the winners moving on to finals day.
Birmingham Bears (Warwickshire): The Birmingham Bears, representing Warwickshire County Cricket Club, have been a prominent team in the T20 Blast since its inception in 2003. Known for their competitive spirit, the Bears claimed the title in 2014, becoming the first team to win under a city name. Durham: Durham, representing Durham County Cricket Club, has participated in the T20 Blast since the tournament’s inception in 2003. The team has shown flashes of brilliance over the years, with standout performances that have made them competitive contenders. Ben Stokes, an exceptional all-rounder and one of the top players to have represented Durham, has been instrumental in the team’s success whenever available, providing crucial contributions with both bat and ball. Lancashire Lightning: Lancashire Lightning, part of the T20 Blast since its debut in 2003, represents Lancashire County Cricket Club. Known for their strong performances, the Lightning claimed the T20 Blast title in 2015. A key player for Lancashire is Jos Buttler, an explosive wicketkeeper-batsman renowned for his game-changing innings and dynamic hitting. Leicestershire Foxes: The Leicestershire Foxes have been competing in the T20 Blast since its inaugural season in 2003, representing Leicestershire County Cricket Club. The team achieved notable success in the tournament by winning the title in 2004. A standout player for the Foxes has been Colin Ackermann, a versatile all-rounder known for his powerful batting and effective spin bowling. Northamptonshire Steelbacks: The Northamptonshire Steelbacks have been a fixture in the T20 Blast since the competition began in 2003, representing Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. The team achieved significant success by winning the T20 Blast title in 2013.
