Sri Lankan Duo Out for CPL 2024; Shamsi and Nortje Signed as Replacements
The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots will be without Sri Lankan duo Wanindu Hasaranga and Nuwan Thushara for the upcoming CPL 2024. Both players are sidelined due to injuries sustained during Sri Lanka’s recent home series against India.
Thushara, who suffered a finger injury, has been ruled out for the entire series. At the same time, Hasaranga, who played all three T20Is and the first ODI, is unavailable due to a hamstring injury.
The Patriots have signed South African bowlers Tabraiz Shamsi and Anrich Nortje to fill the void. Although Nortje will make his CPL debut, Shamsi is no stranger to the league. He has appeared in 32 matches, including 27 for the Patriots, where he has claimed 33 wickets at an economy rate of 7.06.
Shamsi and Nortje will join their South African teammate Tristan Stubbs at the Patriots. The team had a challenging CPL 2023, finishing last with just one win in ten games. It will hope these new additions will boost its performance.
Kyle Mayers, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rilee Rossouw, Evin Lewis, Sherfane Rutherford, Sikandar Raza, Anrich Nortje, Andre Fletcher, Tristan Stubbs, Dominic Drakes, Mikyle Louis, Odean Smith, Joshua da Silva, Veerasammy Permaul, Ryan John, Ashmead Nedd, Johann Layne
Suryakumar Yadav to Play in Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament Under Sarfaraz Khan’s Captaincy
India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, remains committed to Test cricket despite not having played in the format for over a year. Although he was not initially named in the young Mumbai squad for the pre-season Buchi Babu Invitational tournament in Tamil Nadu, Yadav has expressed his availability for the latter half of the competition, which runs through August.
Yadav will join the team under the captaincy of Sarfaraz Khan, as he requested that the leadership remain unchanged. He is expected to feature in Mumbai’s match against Jammu and Kashmir in Salem, starting August 27.
“I want to play for India in all three formats,” Suryakumar was quoted as saying by the Times of India. “Playing in Buchi Babu will give me good practice for the red-ball tournaments this season.”
Suryakumar Yadav recently captained India to a 3-0 series victory over Sri Lanka in his first tour as a full-time T20I captain. However, he was not selected for the subsequent ODI series, with selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar stating that Yadav is separate from separate from their current ODI plans.
With no T20Is scheduled for India until their series against Bangladesh in October, Yadav has a valuable opportunity to focus on red-ball cricket and vie for a Test comeback. He will participate in the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament, followed by the season-opening Duleep Trophy in Anantapur, which features four teams selected by the national selectors.
Yadav’s most recent first-class appearance was in last season’s Duleep Trophy in July 2023. Across 82 first-class matches, he has amassed 5,628 runs at an average of 43.62, including 29 fifties and 14 centuries.
