Deitz Praises West Indies Players for Their Commitment and Determination

West Indies head coach Shane Deitz commended his team’s commitment and passion, even in defeat, as they narrowly missed out on the T20 World Cup final. The team fell just eight runs short of New Zealand’s score in the semifinal on Friday. With this loss, the 2024 edition of the World Cup is set to crown a new champion, as South Africa and New Zealand will face off in the final.

Throughout the tournament, the West Indies battled several injuries. Deandra Dottin’s bowling was limited early on due to concerns over a side strain. Stafanie Taylor, the team’s captain, also faced challenges, dealing with a recurring knee injury that affected her performance.

Despite these setbacks, Deitz praised his players for giving their all, both physically and emotionally. Their determination was evident, but the injuries, combined with the narrow margin of the loss, ultimately ended their campaign just short of the final.

“It’s been pretty emotional last few days I guess for a great win over England emotions are high we tried to get back to a level for our emotions and be ready to play again, which I think we did,” Deitz said on Friday. But I think the girls are so passionate about playing cricket for the West Indies. And they put their body on the line and their passion on the line all the time. So, they’re going to have some emotions.”

Taylor’s Grit and West Indies’ Resilience Earn Praise from Deitz

Praising the effort of Taylor, he added, “The medical staff did a great job and yeah every day she (Stafanie Taylor) was battling soreness and pain and she was just battling to get through it all the time. It was amazing that she was able to come up today. She looked probably better than she did for the last few weeks. So yeah she really was mind over matter, mind over body today. She gave everything. Obviously, she couldn’t get us over the line, but she put everything in for the team, which we all respect and thank her for that.”

Although the West Indies didn’t reach the final, their performance in the tournament was impressive. They finished at the top of Group B and even knocked out one of the world’s strongest teams, England, in the first round. This was a major achievement for the team, especially since they hadn’t been performing at their best leading up to the tournament.

Their campaign didn’t start well, with a heavy 10-wicket loss to South Africa in the opening match. However, the team bounced back at key moments, with different players stepping up and showcasing their skills when it mattered most.

This resilience and ability to deliver in crucial situations were key to their success, despite not making it to the final.

“Over the last 12 months we’ve been working towards how we’re going to match the best teams in the world and we had to design a way or work out a way of cricket that’s going to suit West Indies cricket and how we can play with our style of play which we’ve been trying to work on and develop a West Indies way which has been successful in men’s cricket and women’s cricket for a long time.

Deitz Reflects on West Indies’ Progress and Missed Opportunities

“We’re just trying to get back to those roots of entertaining cricket and backing ourselves and trying to win games, not hope the other teams play bad. We want to try out and actually get on the front foot and dominate teams. So, we’re at a process. It’s only been a year, as I say, but we’ve improved a lot. And the next 2020 World Cup, T20 World Cup in 2026, I think we’ll be ready to take on the world again,” said Deitz.

On Friday, in their chase of a challenging 129-run target, West Indies faced early setbacks, losing two quick wickets. Key batters Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor struggled to build momentum, which left the team on the backfoot.

Despite a late effort by Deandra Dottin and Zaida James to revive the innings, their efforts fell short, and West Indies couldn’t reach the target, ending their campaign just shy of victory.

However, the West Indian coach defended the two key players. “They were trying to hit the ball, they just couldn’t seem to get hold of it. Those girls have played a lot of cricket and are brilliant players, so they’ve got to stick to what’s worked for them in the past. They just couldn’t quite milk it.”

“If you look at Suzie Bates, she’s a great innovator of the game and her batting, so that’s a natural game. Maybe it suited the surface, but Hayley and Stafanie really backed themselves to be able to play their own way and it didn’t come off today, but sometimes that’s cricket. So, we’ll review, see if there’s something that we could have done better next time.”
