Punjab Kings began their TATA IPL 2024 campaign with a thrilling four-wicket win over Delhi Capitals in Match 2, held at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. In the inaugural IPL match at the new venue, Sam Curran (63 off 47) and Liam Livingstone (38* off 21) played pivotal roles in helping PBKS chase down 175, following a disciplined bowling effort restricting DC to 174/9.
Chasing 175, PBKS made a strong start but lost both openers, Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow, during the Powerplay. The duo had put on 34 runs in just three overs, starting with a flurry of boundaries, including four fours off the first over from Khaleel Ahmed. However, Ishant Sharma broke the partnership by dismissing Dhawan. Then he orchestrated a run-out to remove Bairstow, as his fingertips deflected a Prabhsimran Singh drive, leaving Bairstow short at the non-striker’s end. Impact Player Prabhsimran Singh responded with a couple of fours, taking PBKS to 53/2. DC faced a setback when Ishant was forced off the field due to a leg injury while fielding. Despite DC’s tight bowling, they lost two more quick wickets—Kuldeep Yadav removing Prabhsimran Singh at long-on and Jitesh Sharma being stumped by Rishabh Pant off Yadav’s next over.

Kuldeep Yadav had an opportunity to claim another wicket in his final over but was denied when Tristan Stubbs dropped Sam Curran, who was on 34, at long-on. With 63 needed off 36 balls, Curran and Liam Livingstone accelerated the chase, hitting two fours and a six off Mitchell Marsh to take 18 runs off the 15th over. Curran brought up his fifty off 39 balls, and the pair shifted gears, putting PBKS in control. However, Curran was dismissed for 64 (47) in the penultimate over, bowled out by Khaleel Ahmed. Khaleel struck again on the next ball, removing Shashank Singh, who caught behind off a bouncer. Khaleel could have had a third wicket in the over but was denied when David Warner dropped Harpreet Brar at long-on. With six needed from six balls, Sumit Kumar started with a couple of wides. After a dot ball, Livingstone sealed the victory with a towering six over deep mid-wicket, giving PBKS the win.
Earlier, Punjab Kings‘ captain Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and chose to field. A special moment unfolded as Rishabh Pant made his long-awaited return to competitive cricket after his life-threatening car accident on December 30, 2022. Delhi Capitals began aggressively but lost Mitchell Marsh early. Marsh and Warner had put together a decisive 39-run stand, with three fours and three sixes before Arshdeep Singh dismissed Marsh after he had hit a six in the previous ball. Warner continued to attack, bringing up DC’s fifty with a cracking four and a scooped six off Kagiso Rabada in the following over. At the end of the Powerplay, DC was 54/1. Warner and Shai Hope extended the partnership with a 35-run stand from 28 balls. Still, Harshal Patel struck, getting Warner caught behind off a bouncer after a successful review. Pant then walked to the crease to a standing ovation as Hope continued to keep the scoreboard ticking. However, Rabada returned to dismiss Hope (33 off 25) on the 11th as another promising partnership was developing.
The innings quickly unraveled for Delhi Capitals as Harshal Patel struck again two overs later, dismissing Rishabh Pant (18 off 13), who was caught at backward point. In the very next over, Harpreet Brar played a pivotal role, having Ricky Bhui caught behind following a superb review. With half their side back in the shed by the 14th over, DC’s collapse continued. Tristan Stubbs was brilliantly caught at wide long-off by Shashank Singh off Rahul Chahar.
DC’s score slipped from 94/2 to 128/6 in five overs, with wickets falling regularly. Axar Patel, who had been looking confident with a 12-ball 20, was run out in the 18th over. To counter the mounting pressure, DC sent Abishek Porel as their Impact Player, replacing Bhui. Porel provided a much-needed late surge, scoring a scintillating 32* off 10 balls, including four fours and two sixes, as he helped DC reach a competitive total of 174/9. His explosive hitting in the final over, where he scored 25 runs off six balls, gave DC a boost as PBKS introduced Prabhsimran Singh as their Impact Player for the final over of the first innings.
