Phil Salt and Fazalhaq Farooqi Secure Victory for Manchester Originals at Lord’s
Manchester Originals clinched a 12-run victory over London Spirit at Lord’s, thanks to standout performances from Phil Salt and Fazalhaq Farooqi. Salt, the Meerkat Match Hero, scored 58 off 41 balls, setting a target of 136. Farooqi then excelled with the ball, taking 3 for 24 to help defend the total.
The defeat ended London Spirit’s season, leaving them unable to advance to the knockout stages. Farooqi’s crucial dismissals of Michael Pepper and Ollie Pope, combined with a direct hit run-out of Dan Lawrence by wicketkeeper Salt, put Originals in a commanding position.
Despite Keaton Jennings’ unbeaten 61 from 50 balls and a 96-run partnership with Shimron Hetmyer, who contributed 44 from 35, London Spirit fell short, finishing at 123 for 5. Hetmyer’s dismissal and Andre Russell’s quick exit, where he was caught by Wayne Madsen off Farooqi, sealed Spirit’s fate as they fell 12 runs short.
Manchester Originals, despite a few fielding lapses and dropped chances, managed to secure the win. Salt’s innings, which featured four fours and two sixes, was the highlight, while Richard Gleeson and Olly Stone also made significant contributions with the ball.
The 25-year-old registered his first professional century having come in at 53 for 3
Surrey 306 for 4 (Blake 100*, Syke 87*, Porter 2-45) beat Essex 217 (Westley 78, Steel 4-50) by 89 runs
Josh Blake notched his first professional century, guiding Surrey to a crucial 89-run victory over Essex in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup at Chelmsford. Blake, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman, remained unbeaten on 100 from 100 balls, anchoring Surrey’s innings after they had stumbled to 53 for 3.
Blake’s innings included a key 98-run partnership with opener Ryan Patel, who contributed 83 from 106 balls. The pair laid a solid foundation before Blake combined with Ollie Sykes, who added an explosive 87 off 56 balls, including five sixes. Their unbroken 155-run stand in 16 overs lifted Surrey to a formidable 306 for 4.
Essex, unable to mount a serious challenge, fell short by 90 runs, with only captain Tom Westley offering significant resistance with 78 from 84 balls. The defeat ensured neither team would advance to the knockout stages, with Essex’s chase faltering throughout.
Surrey’s innings began cautiously, reaching 39 for 2 in the first powerplay. However, they accelerated dramatically, scoring 192 runs in the last 25 overs, including 117 in the final 10. Blake and Sykes took advantage of a weary Essex attack, unleashing a barrage of boundaries.
Patel’s early effort was instrumental but less flashy compared to the late fireworks. He reached fifty with a cover drive off Tom Westley, and later, a boundary off Jamal Richards brought up Surrey’s 100. Patel’s departure to a catch by Westley off Noah Thain left Blake to anchor the innings.
Jamie Porter, returning with the white ball after a year, claimed two of Surrey’s early wickets, while Shane Snater and Conor McKerr also contributed with crucial breakthroughs. Despite a brief resistance from Benkenstein and a late flurry from Ben Allison, Essex’s innings never gained momentum, ending at 217 with three overs remaining.
Blake’s unbeaten century and Sykes’ aggressive innings ensured Surrey’s win, while Essex’s inability to build partnerships proved costly.
