Vlaeminck Out of WBBL Season Due to Shoulder Injury

Melbourne Renegades Fast Bowler Tayla Vlaeminck Misses Another WBBL Season Due to Injury

Tayla Vlaeminck, the talented fast bowler for Australia and the Melbourne Renegades, will miss the WBBL for the third consecutive year due to injury. The 25-year-old suffered a dislocated shoulder during Australia’s T20 World Cup match against Pakistan, just moments after the game began. This was her first major tournament appearance since 2018.

After being ruled out of the World Cup, the Renegades confirmed on Friday that Vlaeminck would also be unavailable for the WBBL season, which starts next Sunday. She has not played in the WBBL since November 2021 when she was with the Hobart Hurricanes. Although she signed with the Renegades ahead of the 2022-23 season, a series of unfortunate injuries has kept her from playing.

Vlaeminck has dislocated her left shoulder twice before. The first incident occurred while playing for Victoria in the 2017-18 season, and the second happened during the Australia A tour of England last year, requiring corrective surgery. Before her debut for Australia in 2018, she underwent two ACL reconstructions. Additionally, foot stress fractures sidelined her from key events like the 2020 T20 World Cup, the 2022 ODI World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, and the 2023 T20 World Cup. As part of her rehabilitation, she even trained with professional dancers at the Australian Ballet to aid her recovery.

Head Joins Strikers for BBL Amid Busy International Commitments

Travis Head, Australia’s versatile cricketer, has signed a one-year contract to play for the Adelaide Strikers in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. However, due to his packed international schedule, he will only be available for a maximum of three matches while fulfilling Test commitments.

At 30 years old, Head previously captained the Strikers to a BBL title in the 2017-18 season but hasn’t played for the team since the 2022-23 season. His availability for the BBL is limited because of an intense five-match Test series against India, followed by a Test tour of Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy. He will be able to participate in matches on January 11, 15, and 18.

The BBL had hoped to see more of Australia’s Test players participating to enhance the competition during the later stages of the tournament. However, there are concerns about player workload following a demanding series against India, especially with the upcoming overseas tour to Sri Lanka, which involves spinning conditions. While the exact dates for the Sri Lanka Test tour are still to be confirmed, the first Test could begin as early as January 29, with the Australian team preferring at least ten days of preparation on site. This tight schedule means Head might have to travel to Perth for the Strikers’ last game on January 18 before potentially heading to Sri Lanka.

Managing Workload: Head Balances Busy Schedule with BBL Return Amid Personal Milestones

As an all-format player over the past year, Head’s workload has become a significant consideration for Australia’s selectors and coaching staff. His decision to play in the Major League Cricket tournament in July raised concerns, coming after a relentless schedule that included the 2023 ODI World Cup, five home Tests, a T20I and Test tour of New Zealand, a full IPL season, and the T20 World Cup.

In preparation for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Head has been rested from the ODI and T20I series against Pakistan, partly due to the impending arrival of his second child. Despite this, his participation in the BBL in January means he likely won’t have another substantial break until after the Champions Trophy in February and March. Following that, he may be retained by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the IPL or enter the mega auction. Additionally, Australia could face the World Test Championship final immediately after the IPL, followed by a Test series against the West Indies in June and July. New Strikers coach Tim Paine is aware of Head’s heavy workload but is eager to have him play in some BBL matches.

“We understand Trav has a hectic international schedule,” Paine said. “But we also know how much he loves getting back in the blue whenever the chance arises and we look forward to our fans being treated to more of his magic this summer.”
