Rajat Patidar’s explosive innings (52 off 32) and Will Jacks’ powerful 41 off 29, combined with a solid bowling and fielding display, led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to a commanding 47-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 62 of the TATA IPL 2024 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
After RCB lost key players Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli during the Powerplay, Patidar’s counter-attack helped the team recover. He partnered with Jacks to score 88 runs off 53 balls, pushing RCB to 187/9. In response, RCB’s bowlers and fielders delivered an exceptional performance, dismissing DC for 140 and securing the win by 47 runs.
RCB’s bowling attack started strong, taking four wickets within the first four overs. Impact Player Swapnil Singh struck first, dismissing David Warner with a catch at long-on in the opening over. Jake Fraser-McGurk, who hit a six and two fours off his first few balls, looked to lead DC’s fightback but fell in the next over. Yash Dayal took two key wickets: he bowled Abishek Porel with his first delivery. Then he caused a run-out by deflecting a powerful shot from Shai Hope onto the stumps, leaving Fraser-McGurk stranded outside his crease.
Mohd Siraj struck again in the next over, trapping Kumar Kushagra LBW and leaving DC at 30/4. Shai Hope and Axar Patel then led a fightback, with Hope playing some beautiful shots and Axar opting for powerful strikes. Together, they scored 56 runs off 36 balls before Ferguson ended the partnership. He dismissed Hope with a brilliant catch at deep mid-wicket off a slower full toss.

Things got worse for DC when Green’s excellent fielding off his own bowling resulted in Tristan Stubbs being run out by a direct hit. Despite the setbacks, Axar continued to fight and reached his fifty in style, with a six off Jacks in just 30 balls.
RCB kept taking wickets, and Rasikh Salam was dismissed for a catch to long-on off Green. The final blow came in the next over when Yash Dayal dismissed Axar (57 off 39), who misjudged a shot to backward point, reducing Delhi Capitals to 128/8. From there, it was only a matter of time before RCB bowled DC out for 140. Dayal sealed the win by cleaning up Kuldeep Yadav, finishing with impressive figures of 3/20.
Earlier, Axar Patel, standing in as captain for the suspended Rishabh Pant, won the toss and chose to field.
RCB started aggressively but lost two critical wickets during the Powerplay. Virat Kohli began with two impressive sixes, one off Ishant Sharma and another off Khaleel Ahmed. However, Axar brought Mukesh Kumar into the attack in the third over, and he made an immediate impact, dismissing Faf du Plessis, caught by the third man off an outside edge. The battle between Ishant and Kohli was intense; Kohli found the gap for a four and then smashed a stylish no-look 90m six. But Ishant got his revenge, beating Kohli with the next delivery and having him caught behind.
Rajat Patidar took charge with an aggressive approach, hitting three fours off Mukesh in the fifth over. He and Will Jacks then unleashed a series of big hits, combining for five sixes in the next four overs.
DC had a chance to break the partnership between the aggressive batters in the same over. First, Axar Patel dropped a problematic catch off Kuldeep to dismiss Jacks, and then, three balls later, Shai Hope dropped Patidar. Patidar, undeterred, reached his fifty off just 29 balls. DC finally managed to take a wicket when Axar pulled off an excellent catch at extra cover to dismiss Patidar (52 off 32) off Rasikh Salam’s bowling.
DC’s bowlers fought back, with Kuldeep dismissing Jacks (41 off 29) in the 15th over, caught by Axar again at extra cover. Cameron Green and Mahipal Lomror tried to accelerate in the 17th over, hitting three sixes off Kuldeep. However, DC responded strongly, taking three quick wickets in the next two overs. Khaleel Ahmed removed Lomror and Dinesh Karthik in the 18th over. Salam dismissed Impact Player Swapnil Singh, who had replaced Patidar, in the 19th over. Mukesh Kumar bowled a tight final over, conceding just eight runs and helping DC take two run-outs. RCB ended their innings at 187/9 from 20 overs.
