The IPL 2024 finale was a one-sided affair as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) delivered a commanding performance to outclass Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Opting to bat first proved disastrous for SRH, as Mitchell Starc struck early, removing both openers within the first two overs of the powerplay. His fiery spell set the tone, and the pressure only mounted as KKR’s bowlers tightened their grip on the game.
Andre Russell and Nitish Rana were clinical in the middle overs, strangling the SRH batters and leaving them little room to score. Russell’s three wickets and Rana’s two pivotal strikes crippled SRH’s lineup. Even contributions from Aiden Markram (20) and Pat Cummins (24) couldn’t salvage the innings, as SRH managed only a modest 113 runs.
KKR’s chase was smooth despite an early setback when Sunil Narine fell cheaply. Rahmanullah Gurbaz took charge, playing aggressively to put KKR in control. Venkatesh Iyer then delivered the finishing blow with a sensational half-century, smashing his runs at a blistering strike rate of 200. His heroics sealed the victory in style, cementing KKR’s dominance in the IPL 2024 finale.

Mitchell Starc: Mitchell Starc reflected on Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) incredible IPL season, highlighting the team’s consistency and collective effort as the key to their success. “What a season for KKR! We had a fantastic squad, and everyone contributed consistently, which played a big part in our success,” Starc shared. He praised both teams in the final, calling them “the two most exciting teams” of the tournament, making the victory even more special.
Speaking about the final match, Starc acknowledged the challenges of adapting to conditions after losing the toss. “We had to bowl first, and having seen the game here two nights ago, we weren’t sure what to expect. But the bowling unit stepped up, showing their skills with some outstanding wicket-taking deliveries,” he said. For Starc, the match was personally rewarding and underscored the strength of KKR’s dynamic bowling attack, which he described as “exciting” and fun to be a part of.
Pat Cummins, SRH Skipper: Pat Cummins, skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), praised the opposition’s bowling performance in the IPL 2024 final, admitting that his team was outplayed. “They bowled fantastically and gave nothing away. We didn’t have enough runs on the board, and it was a tricky track to figure out, much like the last game in Ahmedabad,” he said. Cummins reflected on the challenging conditions, noting that a score of 160 might have given them a fighting chance, as the pitch didn’t feel like a high-scoring one.
Despite the loss, Cummins looked back on SRH’s season with pride, especially their explosive batting performances, which saw them score over 250 runs three times—a significant achievement. “It was a great season for us. I hadn’t worked with many of the guys before, but it was fantastic working with such a talented squad and an amazing support staff. I had a great time, and this team showed tremendous potential throughout the tournament,” he concluded.
Shreyas Iyer, KKR Skipper: Shreyas Iyer, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper, described their IPL 2024 triumph as a “comprehensive” victory, highlighting the collective effort that defined their season. “Every player responded to what was demanded and stood up. It’s difficult to put into words how I feel right now—there’s so much to cherish. We were fortunate to bowl first today, and everything went our way,” Iyer said. He also acknowledged the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for their strong season, showing respect for their journey to the final.
Iyer praised key contributors, singling out Mitchell Starc for his incredible work ethic and Andre Russell for his knack for game-changing breakthroughs. “Russell has a magic wand; he never fails to deliver and gave us crucial breakthroughs in most games,” he added. He also lauded Venkatesh Iyer for making the chase look effortless. Reflecting on their campaign, Iyer emphasized the cumulative team effort that led to their success, calling it a “flawless” and “invincible” season of cricket where every player stepped up when it mattered most.
