Who Won Yesterday’s IPL Match Between Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) delivered another explosive batting performance to chase down 215 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match 69 of the TATA IPL 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, securing their eighth victory. After losing Travis Head to the first ball of the innings, Abhishek Sharma led the recovery with a blistering 66 off 28 balls. He then shared a 72-run partnership off just 30 balls with Rahul Tripathi, who played a quickfire knock of 33 off 18 balls, setting a solid foundation. Nitish Reddy (37 off 25) and Heinrich Klaasen (42 off 26) further strengthened SRH’s position with aggressive strokes before Abdul Samad and Sanvir Singh guided SRH to victory, crossing the line with five balls remaining. Earlier, a superb comeback by SRH in the death overs restricted PBKS to 214/5 after they had been comfortably placed at 151/1.

Defending 215, PBKS’ Impact Player Arshdeep Singh gave his team a brilliant start by removing Travis Head with a stunning delivery off the first ball of the innings.

Rahul Tripathi and Abhishek Sharma launched a fierce counter-attack. Tripathi began the assault by hitting a four to get off the mark, then took on Rishi Dhawan in the second over, smashing two fours and a six to collect 16 runs. Abhishek followed suit, targeting Arshdeep in the next over with two sixes and a four, helping SRH reach 50 by the end of the fourth over. The pair put on 72 runs before Harshal Patel’s slower ball dismissed Tripathi for 33, a knock that had started the counter-attack. Despite being hit for two sixes and a four earlier in the over, Harshal made a strong comeback.

Abhishek’s Blistering Fifty Powers SRH, Samad and Sanvir Seal the Win

Abhishek, however, kept up the pressure, playing some exquisite strokes. He brought up his half-century spectacularly, reaching 50 off 21 balls with two consecutive fours off Harshal. He then completed a 50-run partnership with Nitish Reddy in style, launching a six off Harpreet Brar and following it up with another six off the next delivery. SRH reached 129/2 at the halfway mark.

With another crucial partnership building, Jitesh Sharma turned to Shashank Singh, who made an immediate impact by dismissing Abhishek Sharma (66 off 28) off his first ball, with the batter caught at deep point. Despite the setback, SRH continued to dominate as Nitish Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen launched a barrage of sixes, blasting four in just two overs. Harshal Patel returned to stem the flow of runs, dismissing Nitish for 37 (25), caught in the deep. PBKS almost had Shahbaz in the next over, but Harshal dropped a sitter at deep square leg. Nevertheless, the 47-run partnership between Nitish and Klaasen put SRH in control.

With 33 runs needed off 30 balls, SRH was in a solid position to seal the win. While they lost Shahbaz and Klaasen along the way, there was no panic as Abdul Samad and Sanvir Singh calmly chased down the target, reaching it in the final over to secure a four-wicket victory. Sanvir sealed the win with a four, propelling SRH to second place in the standings with 17 points.

Jitesh Sharma, leading Punjab Kings for the first time in Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran’s absence, won the toss and chose to bat first.

PBKS made a strong start, with openers Prabhsimran Singh and Atharva Taide putting on 61 runs without losing a wicket in the Powerplay. The pair played some stylish shots, mainly hitting straight down the ground. They struck eight fours and two sixes, with Taide finishing the Powerplay in style by smashing a six over wide long-on.

After the Powerplay, they continued their aggressive batting, reaching 97/0 by the 9th over. However, in the 10th over, Pat Cummins brought back T Natarajan, delivering the breakthrough by getting Taide caught at backward point for 46 (27).

Prabhsimran’s Fifty Sets the Stage, But SRH Stages a Stunning Comeback

Prabhsimran Singh then brought up his fifty off 34 balls, marking his second of the season. He and Rilee Rossouw kept the runs flowing, attacking Nitish Reddy in the 12th over for 20 runs. The pair reached a 50-run partnership off just 26 balls and helped PBKS across 150 runs in the 14th over.

To break the partnership, Cummins brought Vijayakanth Viyaskanth back into the attack, and the spinner delivered with the vital wicket of Prabhsimran Singh. Heinrich Klaasen took a stunning catch, diving forward to grab a ball that popped up after Prabhsimran missed a swing, possibly brushing his glove. Prabhsimran reviewed the decision, but the umpires upheld the catch.

That wicket sparked a dramatic collapse for PBKS. Nitish Reddy pulled off a superb piece of fielding, running out Shashank Singh with an athletic effort off his own bowling. Another quick wicket followed as Rilee Rossouw (49 off 24) fell one short of his fifty, caught at long-on off Cummins. Sanvir Singh then produced an outstanding catch, running backward at extra cover to dismiss Ashutosh Sharma off Natarajan’s bowling. PBKS went from a strong 151/1 in the 15th over to 187/5 by the 19th.

Captain Jitesh Sharma provided a much-needed late surge, scoring 32* off 15 balls, including two sixes and a four off Nitish Reddy’s final over. His cameo helped PBKS reach 214/5. Arshdeep Singh replaced Ashutosh Sharma as the Impact Player for the second innings.
