In the highly anticipated CSK vs MI TATA IPL 2024 match, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a 20-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium. After MI won the toss and opted to bowl, CSK posted an imposing total of 206, thanks to a solid batting performance. Rohit Sharma kept MI in the chase with a brilliant century, but CSK’s bowlers, particularly Matheesha Pathirana (4/28), held their nerve under pressure to seal the win in this thrilling CSK vs MI contest.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a surprise change to their opening pair, with Ajinkya Rahane partnering Rachin Ravindra instead of the usual Ruturaj Gaikwad. Rahane was dismissed early, but Gaikwad quickly took charge with a thrilling display of batting, lighting up the stadium and setting the stage for a memorable CSK vs MI clash.
In the third over, Ruturaj Gaikwad hit Mohammad Nabi for a six straight down the ground. During his innings of 69 from 40 balls, he hit five sixes, mixing his aggressive shots with his usual class. He also played some beautifully timed drives for fours and hit a few impressive cuts through the off-side.
Rachin Ravindra started looking confident and even hit a big six off leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal. However, he was out the next ball, caught by the wicketkeeper. Shivam Dube, known for hitting sixes, then came to the crease and built a quick 90-run partnership with Gaikwad in just 45 balls.
Shivam Dube’s innings in the CSK vs MI match was notably different from his usual approach: he hit just two sixes during his unbeaten 66 off 38 balls. Instead, he relied on 14 well-placed boundaries, demonstrating both power and smart shot selection. CSK’s batters accelerated dramatically between the 10th and 15th overs, adding 87 runs. This surge included a significant 22-run over from Romario Shepherd, where Dube smashed two sixes over the leg side, positioning CSK for a score above 200.
In the CSK vs MI game, Mumbai Indians made a brief comeback when captain Hardik Pandya dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad with a slower ball in the 16th over. From that point until the end of the 19th over, CSK only managed to add 31 more runs, and MI fans began to hope for keeping CSK under 200. Despite this, there was still excitement in the air as a crowd favorite was set to make a thrilling final appearance in the CSK vs MI clash.
In the final over, the crowd erupted as MS Dhoni came out to bat. He stayed calm and hit three consecutive sixes, helping CSK pass the 200-run mark and electrifying the stadium, making it feel like a home game for CSK.
Mumbai Indians started their chase well, with Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan putting on 70 runs in just 43 balls. Rohit played some big shots, including a six over mid-wicket and another mighty six over the leg-side, showing early intent.
Despite the strong start, MI couldn’t keep up with CSK’s high total, and Dhoni’s late fireworks proved the turning point in CSK’s victory.
Ishan Kishan kept the momentum going with a quick 23 off 15 balls, which included a huge six over fine-leg off Shardul Thakur. However, Rohit Sharma took charge early on, as MI raced to 70 runs in seven overs, keeping pace with the required rate. At this point, Ruturaj Gaikwad brought Matheesha Pathirana as the Impact Player.
Pathirana immediately impacted, taking a wicket with his first ball as Kishan hit it straight to mid-wicket. A few deliveries later, CSK struck again, dismissing Suryakumar Yadav, MI’s Impact Player. Suryakumar edged a short ball to the third man, where Mustafizur Rahman made an impressive catch. Though he crossed the boundary, he threw the ball in the air and returned to complete the catch, delivering two crucial blows to MI’s chase.
In the CSK vs MI match, Tilak Varma and Rohit Sharma formed a crucial 60-run partnership off 38 balls, keeping Mumbai Indians (MI) in the chase. During this stand, Rohit reached his half-century, showing determination to continue. At the same time, Tilak played some excellent shots, including five boundaries in his 31. However, as the partnership was building, CSK brought back Matheesha Pathirana in the 14th over. Tilak attempted a big shot but was caught by Shardul Thakur at mid-off, marking a significant turning point in CSK’s favor.
Pathirana’s over was economical, conceding only six runs, and the following two overs from Thakur and Tushar Deshpande gave away just five runs combined. This led to MI’s required run rate soaring, with Rohit Sharma not getting much strike during this period. CSK’s bowlers executed their plans perfectly, limiting the boundaries and applying pressure on MI. As a result, MI struggled to keep up, allowing CSK to gain control of the game.
Rohit Sharma eventually reached his century—his second in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL)—much to the delight of the home crowd. Despite his remarkable innings, MI fell short of the target. Thanks to their disciplined performance in the middle overs, CSK secured a comfortable victory in the CSK vs MI clash.
