The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 title with a commanding all-round performance against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. This victory marked a historic repeat of their maiden title win at the same venue in 2012, as KKR clinched their third IPL trophy on May 26, 2024.
KKR’s bowlers excelled, restricting the formidable SRH batting line-up to just 113 runs, which KKR chased down in only 10.3 overs with eight wickets to spare. Although Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and chose to bat, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer preferred to bowl first. His bowlers, led by Mitchell Starc—the Player of the Match in their previous encounter in Ahmedabad—delivered a performance that validated Iyer’s decision.
In the wake of the events in Qualifier 1, Abhishek Sharma took strike instead of Travis Head as Mitchell Starc bowled the new ball for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Starc was immediately impacted, getting in excellent shape and challenging Abhishek with his deliveries. On the fifth ball of the first over, Starc delivered a standout ball that pitched around the middle stump and shaped away slightly, resulting in Abhishek squared up and bowled out, hitting the top of the off-stump.
Energized by Starc’s over, Kolkata Knight Riders’ Vaibhav Arora also impressed with his spell. When Travis Head came in to face his first ball, Arora got it to shape away, leading Head to edge it to the wicketkeeper. With SRH at six for two, the Kolkata Knight Riders had struck two significant blows by dismissing the tournament’s most feared opening pair.
Runs were scarce following these early setbacks, as Kolkata Knight Riders maintained pressure with their opening bowlers during the powerplay. SRH managed their first boundary only in the third over. Starc continued his early damage, returning in the fifth over to dismiss Rahul Tripathi, who skied a delivery to mid-wicket while attempting a big shot.
SRH found some relief during the powerplay when they scored 17 runs off the sixth over, delivered by Kolkata Knight Riders’ Vaibhav Arora. Nitish Reddy hit the first six of the SRH innings in that over. As the match progressed into the middle overs, the Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers continued to support Starc and Arora’s efforts. Andre Russell and Harshit Rana further disrupted the SRH innings with crucial wickets. At the same time, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy maintained tight, economical spells.
Reddy was caught behind off Rana shortly after the powerplay. Russell then dismissed Aiden Markram for 20, with Markram holing out to Starc at long-on.
Shahbaz Ahmed was dismissed early in his innings, caught at short fine-leg off the bowling of Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakaravarthy. KKR tightened their control further when Abdul Samad, the impact player, was caught behind Andre Russell. Harshit Rana then delivered a significant blow by bowling out Heinrich Klaasen in the 15th over, leaving SRH under 100 runs.
Pat Cummins fought valiantly to guide SRH past three figures, finishing as the top-scorer for his team with 24 runs. Despite being dropped by Starc at long-on, Cummins extended SRH’s innings, only for his innings to end when he was caught by Starc at long-on in the 19th over.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ run-chase began with Rahmanullah Gurbaz hitting the second ball through point for a boundary. In the second over, Pat Cummins bowled, and Sunil Narine struck the first ball over mid-wicket for a six. However, Narine’s attempt to clear the ground again resulted in a top edge, leading to his dismissal on the leg side. Any jitters KKR might have had were quickly alleviated in the next over when Venkatesh Iyer hit two sixes and a four, including two impressive sixes as he danced down the track to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and lofted the ball down the ground.
The Kolkata Knight Riders’ run-chase accelerated quickly, reaching fifty runs within five overs. While Rahmanullah Gurbaz was relatively calm, Venkatesh Iyer appeared eager. Venkatesh capitalized on the opportunity with three fours and a six in the final over of the powerplay, bowled by T. Natarajan. He was particularly aggressive on the leg side, and KKR completed the powerplay at 72 for one.
After the powerplay, Gurbaz shifted gears when the spinners came on, propelling KKR past 100 runs within nine overs. Gurbaz was eventually dismissed for 39, bringing KKR closer to their target.
The Iyer duo then led Kolkata Knight Riders to their crowning achievement. Venkatesh Iyer reached his half-century in just 24 balls, with the target in sight. He hit the winning runs in the next over, prompting the KKR players to rush onto the field and celebrate their third title.
