In the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Delhi Capitals (DC) secured a 19-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. On a favorable batting pitch, DC posted a formidable total of 208 thanks to a solid team performance. Despite a couple of scare innings from LSG’s batters, DC’s bowlers maintained their composure to seal the win and earn two points.
In the LSG vs DC match, LSG opted to bowl first after winning the toss, a decision that initially proved beneficial. In the very first over, Jake Fraser-McGurk attempted to start aggressively but instead skied a delivery from Arshad Khan to long-on and was caught in the deep.
Although LSG’s early breakthrough put DC on the backfoot, Abishek Porel’s thrilling and determined innings provided a strong counterattack in the LSG vs DC clash, boosting DC’s innings despite the pressure.
In the LSG vs DC match, Abishek Porel displayed his prowess with a series of impressive shots. He began with an upper-cut six off Mohsin Khan in the second over. Following this, in the next over from Arshad, Porel amassed 21 runs with a six and three fours, including a standout cover-drive. Yudhvir Singh, who bowled the fourth over, was also hit for 16 runs, with Shai Hope joining the action. Delhi Capitals concluded the powerplay with a 17-run over from Naveen-ul-Haq, during which Porel struck a flat six over fine-leg after connecting with a delivery down the leg-side.
As the game progressed past the powerplay, the run-rate slightly decreased. Hope (38 off 27 balls) hit Ravi Bishnoi for a six down the ground but was dismissed trying to go over cover, with KL Rahul eventually securing the catch after an initial drop. During this phase of the LSG vs DC clash, Porel reached his fifty off just 21 balls. However, Lucknow Super Giants staged a notable comeback, and removing Porel for 58 in the 12th over was a significant blow to DC.
In the LSG vs DC clash, the next phase of the innings was controlled by Tristan Stubbs, who remained unbeaten with 57 off 25 balls. He partnered with Rishabh Pant (33 off 23 balls) to stabilize the innings. Pant, true to form, played his characteristic shots through the leg-side, including a memorable four through third-man against Naveen-ul-Haq despite the bat slipping from his hands. Pant was dismissed in the 17th over.
Stubbs’s aggressive innings was pivotal in pushing DC past 200. At 136 for three in the 15th over, Stubbs took charge by hitting Arshad for a six and two fours. In the final three overs, DC accumulated 45 runs, including a 21-run penultimate over. Stubbs reached his fifty in just 22 balls with a six off Naveen. This explosive finish in the LSG vs DC match propelled DC to a final total of 208 for four.
LSG’s run-chase was rocked early thanks to Ishant Sharma, the veteran, who bowled a great spell in the powerplay to pick three important wickets. To begin with, he had Rahul caught when he induced the batter to sky it to cover. In the third-over, Quinton de Kock was caught at mid-on. Axar Patel was introduced in the fourth over, and off the first ball he got Marcus Stoinis stumped. At 24 for three, LSG were in deep trouble when Nicholas Pooran walked seemed to be on course.
However, T20 cricket inspires some thrilling performances, and Arshad stepped up for LSG and reignited hopes in the face of a dominating bowling performance by DC. The left-hander fearlessly targeted the boundaries – especially down the ground, and carted sixes with conviction. Arshad’s assault suddenly brought LSG back into the game as he moved to a 25-ball fifty. He wasnaged to hit a six and four.
Arshad’s thrilling batting meant LSG needed 29 off the last two overs but they had only two wickets in hand. Mukesh and Rasikh Salam ensured there was no heartbreak for DC as they kept Arshad quiet and did not concede a boundary in those last two overs. DC have now moved to the fifth spot in the points table with this win, and they will need other results to go their way in order to qualify for the Playoffs.
