In a thrilling Match 33 of the TATA Indian Premier League 2024 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, the Mumbai Indians (MI) narrowly defeated the Punjab Kings (PBKS) by nine runs. Jasprit Bumrah’s 3/21, Gerald Coetzee’s 3/32, and Surya Kumar Yadav’s scintillating 78-run knock and exceptional fielding proved crucial in MI’s victory. Despite a spectacular 61 off 28 from Ashutosh Sharma, MI held their nerve to secure the win after posting 192/7.
In the MI vs PBKS clash, Mumbai Indians started strongly, reducing Punjab Kings to 14/4 within the first three overs. The first over saw an eventful debut for Gerald Coetzee, who faced a challenging start with Sam Curran hitting a four and a couple of wides. However, Coetzee made a comeback, dismissing Prabhsimran Singh with a superb catch by Ishan Kishan. Jasprit Bumrah then joined the action, dismissing Riley Rossouw with a stunning full inswinger, setting the stage for MI’s triumph.
In the MI vs PBKS match, two balls later, a successful review saw Sam Curran dismissed as Bumrah had him caught down the leg side. Gerald Coetzee then compounded PBKS’s woes by removing Liam Livingstone, who was caught and bowled in the next over.
Shashank Singh and Impact Player Harpreet Singh briefly stabilized the innings until Shreyas Gopal delivered a spectacular diving catch off his own bowling to dismiss Harpreet in the seventh over. Shashank attempted to relieve the pressure with consecutive sixes off Gopal in the 9th over. Still, the home side lost another wicket after the Strategic Timeout when Akash Madhwal trapped Jitesh Sharma LBW.
Shashank and Ashutosh Sharma then counter-attacked with a brisk 17-ball 34-run partnership. However, in the MI vs PBKS contest, Hardik Pandya brought Bumrah back into the attack. He made an immediate impact, deceiving Shashank (41 off 25) with a classic slower delivery.
In the MI vs PBKS match, Ashutosh Sharma kept powering sixes, and Harpreet Brar soon joined the boundary-hitting spree, turning the game in PBKS’s favor. Ashutosh celebrated his maiden IPL fifty in style, reaching the milestone off 23 balls with a six over long-off off Akash Madhwal and then reverse sweeping the next delivery for another six. Brar capped the over with a massive six downtown, as the pair accumulated 24 runs from the 16th over, reducing the target to 28 runs off 24 balls.
Bumrah returned to bowl a superb 17th over, giving away just three runs and building the pressure. Gerald Coetzee then made a crucial breakthrough, dismissing the dangerous Ashutosh (61 off 28) with a short delivery caught at deep mid-wicket, swinging the MI vs. PBKS contest back in MI’s favor. Coetzee conceded only two runs in the 18th over, making 23 runs needed off 12 balls.
In the 19th over of the MI vs PBKS game, Brar and Harshal Patel managed four runs off the first three balls against Hardik Pandya before Brar was dismissed off the fourth. Kagiso Rabada arrived and smashed the first ball for a six, keeping the chase alive. A single off the last ball left the equation at 12 runs needed off the final over.
In the MI vs. PBKS match, Akash Madhwal was entrusted with the final over. He began with a wide, and Kagiso Rabada managed to push the next ball to deep point, setting off for a single and then a risky second run. Mohammad Nabi made a superb throw in the deep, and Ishan Kishan, with lightning-quick glovework, disturbed the stumps at the striker’s end as Rabada dived in. Replays confirmed Rabada was short, leading to jubilant celebrations from the Mumbai Indians side.
Earlier in the MI vs PBKS game, Punjab Kings won the toss and chose to field. Sam Curran led the side, but Shikhar Dhawan was still injured. PBKS, known for their strong powerplay performances, started well as Kagiso Rabada struck early, dismissing Ishan Kishan, who was caught at a deep backward point in the third over. Suryakumar Yadav quickly attacked, hitting two fours in the same over. Rohit Sharma also looked in good touch, smashing a couple of fours and a six during the Powerplay. He did face a scare when given out LBW, but a review revealed the ball was missing leg stump.
In the MI vs PBKS match, Suryakumar Yadav accelerated in the final over of the Powerplay, hitting a four and a six off Sam Curran to push the score to 54/1. Suryakumar and Rohit Sharma continued to build their partnership, reaching a 50-run stand in the ninth over. Suryakumar, taking charge of the acceleration, reached his fifty off just 34 balls with his trademark ‘Supla’ shot.
PBKS needed a breakthrough, and captain Curran delivered by re-entering the attack to dismiss Rohit Sharma for 36 (25), caught at backward point and breaking the 81-run stand. PBKS managed to temporarily stem the flow of runs and dry up the boundaries. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav eventually relieved the pressure with three fours off Arshdeep Singh in the 15th. Suryakumar was initially adjudged LBW in the next over but successfully reviewed the decision and then struck a four and a six before Varma added a six with a pull shot over mid-wicket.
