Punjab Kings began their TATA Indian Premier Leagues (IPL) 2024 campaign with a victory, edging out Delhi Capitals by four wickets in Match 2 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. In this PBKS vs DC clash, Sam Curran (63 off 47) and Liam Livingstone (38* off 21) played pivotal roles, guiding PBKS to chase down a target of 175 after a collective bowling effort had restricted DC to 174/9.
In the first IPL match at the new venue, PBKS vs DC saw a promising start for PBKS. Still, they lost openers Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow within the Powerplay. Dhawan and Bairstow had scored 34 runs in the first three overs, with Dhawan hitting four fours in the opening over against Khaleel Ahmed. Ishant Sharma provided the breakthrough, dismissing Dhawan, and then removed Bairstow, who was run out at the non-striker’s end after Sharma deflected a straight drive from Prabhsimran Singh. The replay showed Bairstow was short of his ground, marking a crucial moment in the PBKS vs DC encounter.
Impact Player Prabhsimran Singh hit a couple of fours in the following, helping PBKS reach 53/2 in the PBKS vs DC match. DC suffered a setback in the final over of the Powerplay when Ishant Sharma had to leave the field due to a leg injury sustained while fielding. Despite this, DC maintained tight control, resulting in Kuldeep Yadav dismissing Prabhsimran Singh, who was caught at long-on. Kuldeep struck again in the next over, having Jitesh Sharma stumped by the quick hands of Rishabh Pant.
In the PBKS vs DC encounter, Kuldeep could have had another wicket in his final over, but Stubbs dropped Curran at long on when he was on 34. With 63 runs needed off 36 balls, Curran and Liam Livingstone accelerated the scoring, hitting two fours and a six off Mitchell Marsh to collect 18 runs in the 15th over. Curran reached his fifty off 39 balls, and the duo shifted into high gear, putting PBKS in control. Curran eventually fell for 64 off 47 balls in the penultimate over, cleaned up by Khaleel Ahmed. Khaleel had two wickets in two balls, dismissing Shashank Singh, who was caught behind off a bouncer. Khaleel nearly had a third wicket but was denied when Warner dropped Harpreet Brar at long-on off the last ball of the over.
With 6 runs needed off the final 6 balls, Sumit Kumar began with a couple of wides. Although the third delivery was a dot ball, Liam Livingstone sealed the victory for the home side with a massive six-over deep mid-wicket, clinching the win in the PBKS vs. DC match.
Earlier in the PBKS vs DC encounter, Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and chose to field. It was a memorable occasion for Rishabh Pant, marking his return to competitive cricket after a life-threatening road accident on December 30th, 2022.
Delhi Capitals started aggressively but lost Mitchell Marsh early. Warner and Marsh combined for a 39-run stand, hitting three fours and three sixes with powerful strokes. Marsh was eventually dismissed by Arshdeep Singh in the fourth over following a six conceded to him on the previous ball.
In the PBKS vs DC match, David Warner continued his aggressive play, reaching DC’s fifty with a stunning four and a spectacular scooped six off Rabada in the next over. At the end of the Powerplay, DC stood at 54/1. Warner and Shai Hope extended the momentum with a 35-run standoff of 28 balls. Still, Harshal Patel provided a crucial breakthrough, dismissing Warner caught behind off a bouncer after a successful review.
Rishabh Pant then made a notable entrance to the crease, receiving a standing ovation and enthusiastic applause. However, this moment of celebration quickly turned into a collapse. Just two overs later, Patel struck again, dismissing Pant (18 off 13), caught at backward point. In the following over, Harpreet Brar had Ricky Bhui caught behind after another excellent review. DC lost half their side in the 14th over, and Tristan Stubbs also fell shortly after, caught brilliantly at wide long off by Shashank Singh off Rahul Chahar.
In the PBKS vs DC match, Delhi Capitals went from 94/2 to 128/6 in the span of five overs as wickets continued to fall. Axar Patel, who had looked solid with a 12-ball 20, was run out in the 18th over.
DC then brought in Abishek Porel as their Impact Player, replacing Ricky Bhui. Porel delivered a crucial late surge with a brilliant 10-ball 32*, smashing 4, 6, 4, 4, and 6 in the final over to help DC post 174/9.
In response, PBKS introduced Prabhsimran Singh as their Impact Player in the last over of DC’s innings.
