Lahore, 18 February 2024: Quetta Gladiators began their HBL PSL 9 campaign on a winning note, defeating Peshawar Zalmi by 16 runs in a hard-fought, high-scoring contest at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday afternoon. In this exciting matchup, often called QG vs PZ, the Gladiators showcased their skills to secure the victory.
The day’s second match will feature Multan Sultans against Karachi Kings at Multan Cricket Stadium. The first ball is expected to be bowled at 7 PM.
Peshawar Zalmi faced a challenging target of 207 runs in the QG vs PZ clash. Saim Ayub and Babar Azam provided a solid start, with Saim hitting Akeal Hosein for the first six of Zalmi’s innings in the second over. Babar struck a sumptuous straight drive off Mohammad Amir in the next over. At the same time, Saim welcomed Mohammad Hasnain with a six-over long off on the first ball of the fourth over. Babar continued to assert his dominance against Mohammad Wasim Jnr in the fifth over, smashing him for two magnificent sixes.
The duo accumulated 70 runs during the powerplay in the QG vs PZ match. The 91-run opening partnership ended when Rossouw ran out Saim, who scored 42 runs off 26 balls, including two fours and three sixes. Hosein then struck to remove Mohammad Haris for 7 runs off 6 balls in the 11th over. Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Babar Azam formed a 39-run third-wicket partnership before Babar fell to Abrar Ahmed on the first ball of the 16th over, having scored 68 runs off 42 balls with four boundaries and four sixes. Babar became the first batter to reach 3000 runs in HBL PSL history.
Two balls later in the QG vs PZ contest, Abrar struck again, dismissing Kohler-Cadmore and leaving Zalmi at 150-4. Dan Mousley then joined Rovman Powell in the middle, needing 57 runs off 26 balls. Mousley hit Mohammad Amir for a crucial maximum over the deep backward square on the last ball of the 17th in this thrilling QG vs. PZ showdown.
Amir returned in the 19th over of the QG vs. PZ match to dismiss the dangerous Rovman Powell, ending his cameo of 17 runs from nine balls and leaving Zalmi in a challenging position. Amir bowled the penultimate over for just six runs. With 25 runs needed off the final over, Mohammad Wasim Jnr only conceded eight runs while claiming the wicket of Dan Mousley.
Returning to competitive cricket after an injury, Abrar bowled a tight spell, allowing only 29 runs and taking two crucial wickets. Amir, Hosein, and Hasnain each picked up one wicket as well.
Earlier in the QG vs PZ encounter, after being put into bat by Peshawar Zalmi, the Quetta Gladiators got off to a quick start. Saud Shakeel, making his HBL PSL debut, partnered with the experienced Jason Roy, coming out all guns blazing. Saud struck the first ball of the match for a four towards mid-wicket, setting a positive tone for the innings. The duo amassed 18 runs off Aamir Jamal’s first over and completed a fifty-run opening partnership in just 4.4 overs in this thrilling QG vs PZ contest.
By the end of the powerplay in the QG vs PZ match, Quetta had raced to 70 runs without losing a wicket. Saud Shakeel and Jason Roy brought up a hundred-run partnership at the halfway mark. Roy reached his fifty in the 11th over off 29 balls after smashing Dan Mousley for a maximum over deep midwicket, marking the milestone of 1000 runs in his HBL PSL career. Saud followed suit, bringing up his maiden HBL PSL fifty off 36 balls in the next over.
The duo went berserk in the 14th over of this thrilling QG vs PZ encounter, amassing 20 runs off Saim’s bowling, with Saud hitting two sixes. Roy contributed with one maximum that soared over the bowler’s head.
Luke Wood drew first blood for Zalmi in the 16th over of the QG vs PZ match, dismissing Saud Shakeel (74 runs off 47 balls, including six fours and four sixes), who skied a catch to mid-on, where Babar Azam took a brilliant running catch. The opening partnership 157 between Roy and Saud is now the joint third-highest for any wicket in HBL PSL history and the highest for Quetta Gladiators.
Skipper Rilee Rossouw, batting at number three, got off the mark with a six over midwicket and followed it up with a four down the ground. Rossouw’s innings (14 runs off 7 balls, with one four and one six) was cut short by the tall Mohammad Zeeshan, who made his HBL PSL debut and bowled a full-pitched slower ball that crashed into his stumps. In this exciting QG vs PZ encounter, Salman Irshad ended Roy’s innings, as he was caught at mid-wicket after scoring 75 runs off 48 balls, featuring nine boundaries and two sixes.
Salman secured two more wickets in the final over of the innings during the QG vs. PZ match, dismissing Sherfane Rutherford (20 runs off 13 balls, with three fours) and Mohammad Wasim Jnr (4 runs off 2 balls, including one four) within the span of three balls. Quetta crossed the 200-run mark for the first time in this edition of the HBL PSL, posting 206 runs for losing 5 wickets in their 20 overs. For Peshawar, Salman finished with three wickets, while Luke Wood and Mohammad Zeeshan each took one wicket.
Quetta Gladiators Secured a 16-Run Victory Over Peshawar Zalmi
In an exciting match, the Quetta Gladiators defeated Peshawar Zalmi by 16 runs. Quetta posted 206 runs for 5 wickets in their 20 overs, thanks to impressive performances from Jason Roy, who scored 75 runs, and Saud Shakeel, who contributed 74 runs. Salman Irshad stood out for Peshawar with figures of 3 wickets for 38 runs.
In response, Peshawar Zalmi scored 190 runs for 6 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Babar Azam was the top scorer for Zalmi with 68 runs, while Saim Ayub added 42 runs. Abrar Ahmed took 2 wickets for 29 runs, and Mohammad Amir claimed 1 wicket for 29 runs.
Saud Shakeel was named the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.
