The IPL 2024 match between RR vs KKR on Sunday in Guwahati was ultimately abandoned due to rain, with no play occurring. The game faced significant delays, starting with a light drizzle that quickly became heavy, relentless rain. Initially set for 7 pm IST, the toss was postponed as the rain persisted.
After more than three hours of delays and rain easing slightly, the umpires conducted an inspection. They allowed the toss to occur at 10:35 pm IST. KKR won the toss and chose to field first. However, just as the players were preparing to start, rain returned.
Given the ongoing weather issues, the match officials had no choice but to call off the game without any play. The persistent rain made it impossible to begin the match, leading to its cancellation.
The rainout resulted in Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) earning one point each. KKR finished the league stage at the top of the table with 20 points from 14 matches. Rajasthan Royals ended in third place with 17 points from the same number of matches. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), which is in second place, also has 17 points, but their higher Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.414 compared to RR’s +0.273 gives them the edge. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are in fourth place with 14 points.
In the upcoming playoffs, KKR will play against SRH in Qualifier 1 in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, May 21. Meanwhile, RCB will face RR in the Eliminator on Wednesday, May 22. The winner of Qualifier 1 will secure a spot in the final. At the same time, the losing team will face the winner of the Eliminator in Qualifier 2 in Chennai on May 24. The victor of Qualifier 2 will then compete against the winner of Qualifier 1 in the final, which will take place in Chennai on May 26.
