The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a cricket league organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and supported by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The league started in April 2008 with eight teams representing different cities in India, including Delhi. The teams were auctioned in Mumbai on February 20, 2008, and the GMR Group purchased the Delhi team for $84 million.
In March 2018, GMR sold a 50% team share to JSW Sports for ₹550 crore ($66 million). Later, in December 2018, the team’s name was changed from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals. Co-owner Parth Jindal explained that the new name reflects Delhi’s status as the country’s power center. At the same time, Kiran Kumar Grandhi added that it symbolizes Delhi’s vibrant identity and aims to make the team the center of action.
In 2024, the franchise agreed to a £120 million deal, subject to approval by the England and Wales Cricket Board, to acquire Hampshire County Cricket Club and a 51% stake in the Hundred team Southern Brave.
Before the big auctions, each IPL team could keep up to three players. They also had the option to use Right to Match cards to re-sign two more players during the auctions. The Delhi Daredevils retained Shreyas Iyer, Chris Morris, and Rishabh Pant. Coach Rahul Dravid had to step down to focus on his roles with India A and India U-19 due to a conflict of interest. Ricky Ponting was then hired as the new coach.
The Delhi Capitals retained 14 players and traded for Shikhar Dhawan from Sunrisers Hyderabad, giving up Vijay Shankar, Abhishek Sharma, and Shahbaz Nadeem. For the 12th IPL season, they kept critical players like captain Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Prithvi Shaw, among others. On auction day, they filled their roster with new players, including Colin Ingram, Axar Patel, and Hanuma Vihari. They added Sourav Ganguly as an official advisor. The Capitals had a strong start, winning their first match and advancing to the playoffs for the first time in seven years. They won their first playoff game but lost in the second match to the Chennai Super Kings, finishing as second runners-up, their best performance to date.
For the 2020 IPL season, the Delhi Capitals released several players, including Hanuma Vihari and Chris Morris. They added new ones like Jason Roy, Chris Woakes, and Shimron Hetmyer. Chris Woakes and Jason Roy later withdrew, with Anrich Nortje and Daniel Sams stepping in. The team had a strong start, winning 7 of their first 9 games, but faced a challenging period with four consecutive losses. They secured a playoff spot by winning their final league match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. They advanced to the finals for the first time but lost to Mumbai Indians, their only defeat against them that season. This was Delhi Capitals’ most successful IPL season, played entirely in the UAE.
The 2021 IPL season took place in India at neutral venues, as no team played at their home ground. On March 30, 2021, Steve Smith was named captain of the Delhi Capitals after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out for the season due to a shoulder injury. Delhi Capitals played matches across various cities: 3 in Mumbai, 2 in Chennai, 4 in Ahmedabad, and 5 in Kolkata. They won 6 of their first 8 games and were leading the points table when the season was suspended on May 4 due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the teams’ bio-secure bubbles. With 31 matches still to be played, the BCCI later decided to resume the season in the UAE in September and October 2021, with the revised schedule announced in July.
