Gujarat Titans (GT) is a professional cricket team in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Established in 2021, the team quickly made a mark in the league with its debut season. They play their home matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, a premier venue known for its large capacity and modern facilities. Owned by CVC Capital Partners, the Titans have built a strong foundation focusing on both competitive play and fan engagement.
Currently, Shubman Gill serves as the team’s captain, having taken over the role from Hardik Pandya. Pandya, who led the Titans to their first IPL title in 2022, was a pivotal figure in the team’s early success before being traded to Mumbai Indians. The team is coached by Ashish Nehra, whose leadership and expertise contribute to their strategic approach and development. Under Gill’s captaincy, the Gujarat Titans aim to build on their initial achievements and continue to compete at the highest level.
In August 2021, the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League (IPL) called for bids to add two new teams. This opportunity attracted interest from 22 companies. However, only six serious bids materialized due to the high base price set for the franchises. To streamline the bidding process, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allowed consortiums of up to three companies or individuals to submit a bid for each team. After a competitive bidding process, CVC Capital Partners emerged victorious in October 2021, securing the rights to operate the Ahmedabad franchise with a substantial bid of ₹5,625 crore (US$670 million).
Ahead of the IPL 2022 auctions, the new franchise appointed Hardik Pandya as its captain, setting the stage for a strong debut season. By February 2022, the team was officially named Gujarat Titans, marking its entry into the IPL with high expectations and a fresh, competitive spirit. This new addition to the league aimed to make an immediate impact, leveraging Pandya’s leadership and a carefully assembled squad.
Despite skepticism about their auction strategy and player selections, Gujarat Titans made a remarkable impact in their inaugural IPL season. Many critics had questioned the team’s choices. Still, the Titans quickly proved their worth by securing their first win against fellow debutants Lucknow Super Giants. They continued their impressive run by winning 10 out of their 14 group matches, finishing at the top of the league table with 20 points. This strong performance earned them a place in the playoffs, where they demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level.
In the playoffs, Gujarat Titans showcased their resilience and strategic prowess. They first faced Rajasthan Royals in the qualifier, emerging victorious and advancing to the final. The Titans then met Rajasthan Royals again in the championship match after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore. The final was a gripping contest where Gujarat Titans excelled in bowling and batting. They restricted Rajasthan Royals to 130 runs, setting themselves a challenging but achievable target.
Gujarat Titans chased the target in a thrilling finish with 11 balls to spare. Shubman Gill played a crucial role by hitting the winning six off the first ball of the 19th over, securing the victory for his team. Hardik Pandya was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance, which included 3 wickets for 17 runs and a crucial 34 runs from 30 balls. Pandya’s leadership and the effective management of the squad were highly praised, culminating in Gujarat Titans becoming the second team to win the IPL in their debut season, after Delhi Capitals reached the final in their debut season.
