The Hobart Hurricanes are a professional men’s Twenty20 cricket team based in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. They compete in the Big Bash League (BBL), Australia’s leading domestic Twenty20 competition. The Hurricanes are well-known for their distinctive purple uniforms, a hallmark of the team’s identity.
Most of the Hurricanes’ home matches are played at Blundstone Arena in Hobart, a venue synonymous with the team’s home advantage. They also host some games at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston. This arrangement allows the Hurricanes to connect with fans throughout Tasmania. It ensures that their exciting brand of cricket reaches a broader audience.
By playing across these venues, the Hurricanes effectively engage with their supporters nationwide, strengthening their presence and fan base. Their appearances at Blundstone Arena and the University of Tasmania Stadium offer varied experiences for fans and showcase the team’s competitive spirit on a national stage.
The Hobart Hurricanes’ first coach was Allister de Winter, and their inaugural captain was Tim Paine. They made an impressive debut in the 2011/12 Big Bash League season. In their opening match at the WACA Ground, they defeated the Perth Scorchers by 31 runs, scoring 140 and dismissing the Scorchers for 109. Fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus’s standout performance in this game earned him a spot in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
In their second match, the Hobart Hurricanes faced the heavily favored Sydney Sixers at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. They secured a notable 42-run victory over the Sixers. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan was a key player for the Hurricanes, leading the tournament in wickets with 15 for the season.
In the 2012–13 Big Bash League, the Hobart Hurricanes played 8 matches, winning 4 and losing 4. They finished 6th out of 8 teams, missing a higher placement. The 2013–14 season was more successful for the Hurricanes. They narrowly qualified for the semi-finals, edging the Brisbane Heat by just one point. The Hurricanes won their semi-final match against the Melbourne Stars. Still, they were defeated by the Perth Scorchers in the final by 39 runs, finishing as runners-up, their best result to date.
Ben Dunk had an outstanding season, scoring 395 runs and being named Man of the Tournament. Additionally, Jonathan Wells was recognized as the tournament’s standout young player. Despite their success in 2013–14, the 2014–15 season was less favorable. The Hurricanes won only 3 games and ended the season in 5th place.
In July 2018, the Hobart Hurricanes were selected as one of six teams to compete in the inaugural Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy, which was scheduled to begin in October 2018. This opportunity marked another significant event in the team’s history, expanding their presence on the international stage.
The Hobart Hurricanes were the first Big Bash League (BBL) team to have an official team song. Tim Paine wrote the lyrics, which are set to the tune of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home.” The team also uses “Rock You Like a Hurricane” to lead them onto the field and “Hurricane” by the Australian band Faker as the anthem for their mascot, Captain Hurricane.

In the 2023-24 Big Bash League (BBL) season, the Hobart Hurricanes finished among the top five teams, demonstrating solid performance throughout the competition. They advanced to the knockout stages but faced a tough challenge in the semi-finals against the Sydney Sixers. Despite their strong showing during the regular season, the Hurricanes could not overcome the Sixers in the semi-final clash, which led to their elimination from the tournament. The Hurricanes’ successful season highlighted their competitive edge and resilience in one of the BBL’s most intense seasons.
