The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are a professional cricket team based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Founded in 2021, LSG represents a new addition to the IPL, bringing fresh energy to the league. In August 2021, the Indian Premier League’s Governing Council invited bids for two new teams. Of 22 interested companies, only six serious bids emerged due to the high base price. The RPSG Group, owned by Sanjiv Goenka, secured the rights for one of the new franchises with a substantial bid of ₹7,090 crore (approximately ₹80 billion or $950 million in 2023).
A competition was held to name the new team, and “Lucknow Super Giants” was chosen in January 2022. The name reflects the abbreviation of the owner’s name, Sanjiv Goenka (SG). It follows a naming pattern similar to his previous IPL team, Rising Pune Supergiant. This naming strategy is also reminiscent of the renaming of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club’s football division to Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

In the February 2022 mega auction, the Lucknow Super Giants assembled their inaugural squad, signing key players such as KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Mark Wood, and Marcus Stoinis. KL Rahul was appointed team captain, while former Zimbabwean cricketer Andy Flower was named head coach. Additionally, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir took on the role of team mentor.
In their debut IPL season, the Super Giants finished third in the group stage and advanced to the playoffs. They faced the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Eliminator match but were knocked out at that stage. The team replicated their third-place finish in the 2023 season but was eliminated by the Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator. Despite these setbacks, the Lucknow Super Giants have gained significant popularity, boasting 4.6 million social media followers as of March 2024, making them one of India’s most followed cricket clubs.
