Consecutive wooden spoons (2019–2022)

After their successful 2018–19 championship win, the Melbourne Renegades saw a coaching change when Andrew McDonald stepped down in October 2019, just before the new season. Michael Klinger, who recently retired from playing, was appointed the new coach. However, visa players Usman Shinwari and Faheem Ashraf withdrew right before the season started, leading to English players Harry Gurney and Richard Gleeson stepping in. The Renegades struggled with injuries and poor form throughout the season, finishing 8th, but ended on a high note with a victory over the Brisbane Heat.

The 2020–21 season followed a similar path. Visa recruit Imran Tahir withdrew for personal reasons, and Australian bowler James Pattinson was called up to the national team. Cameron Boyce also missed the season due to illness. Despite a strong start with a win over the Perth Scorchers, the team faced heavy defeats and poor performances. However, they discovered promising young players like Jake Fraser-McGurk and Mackenzie Harvey. They again finished 8th but secured one more win than the previous season. After their final victory against the Hobart Hurricanes, coach Michael Klinger and captain Aaron Finch stepped down. Nic Maddinson took over as captain, but the team ended in 8th place for the third consecutive year. In the lBoyce’sch against the Sydney Thunder, Cameron Boyce’s four-wicket haul was a notable highlight.

In the 2017–18 Big Bash League season, the Melbourne Renegades revamped their squad by adding Jack Wildermuth, Mohammad Nabi, Kieron Pollard, Tim Ludeman, and Kane Richardson, welcoming Brad Hodge back. They qualified for the finals for the first time in five years, finishing 3rd with 6 wins from 10 matches. However, they were narrowly defeated by the Adelaide Strikers in the semi-final by just one run at Adelaide Oval.

The 2018–19 season continued their strong performance with key signings like Dan Christian, Cameron Boyce, Harry Gurney, and Usman Shinwari. The Renegades ended the regular season in second place, earning a home semi-final against the Sydney Sixers. They chased down a target of 181 runs with one ball to spare, thanks to crucial late boundaries from Dan Christian and Kane Richardson.

The final was a Melbourne Derby against the Melbourne Stars, who won the toss and chose to field. Despite being 5/65 after 10.2 overs, the Renegades managed to post 145 runs thanks to an unbeaten 80-run partnership between Dan Christian and Tom Cooper. In a dramatic turn, the Stars, needing 53 runs off 43 balls, collapsed from 0/93 to 7/112. Despite late hitting from Adam Zampa, the Stars fell 13 runs short, and the Renegades secured their first BBL title. Dan Christian was named man of the match for his crucial 38 runs and 2 wickets.

Lean years (2013–2017)

Despite keeping most of their squad from the previous season and adding Australian test bowlers Peter Siddle and James Pattinson, the Melbourne Renegades struggled in the 2013–14 Big Bash League season. They only won three games, finished sixth, and missed the finals.

In the 2014–15 season, the Renegades were hopeful after signing Matthew Wade and Callum Ferguson. However, they finished 6th again and did not make the finals, leading to coach Simon Helmot’s dismissal.

For the 2015–16 season, David Saker was appointed as the new coach, and the team bolstered its lineup with experienced players like Cameron White, Xavier Doherty, and Chris Gayle. The following season, the Renegades strengthened their squad by signing Brad Hogg, Sunil Narine, and Thisara Perera. Despite these additions, they narrowly missed the finals, finishing 5th.

Since their debut in 2011, the Melbourne Renegades have played their home games at Docklands Stadium, which has a drop-in cricket pitch. By the end of the 2016–17 Big Bash League season, Docklands was rated the most entertaining venue for Twenty20 cricket in Australia.

Starting with the 2017–18 season, the Renegades also played up to two home matches each season at Kardinia Park in Geelong, about 70 kilometers southwest of Melbourne.

During the 2020–21 season, the COVID-19 pandemic caused the Renegades to play some of their home games at Blundstone Arena in Hobart, Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast, and Adelaide Oval due to quarantine restrictions. They managed to play only three home games in Victoria, with two at Docklands and one at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
