In BBL|05, the Stars introduced a new mascot named Steven Seagull, inspired by a memorable incident from the previous season. During a match between the Melbourne Stars and the Perth Scorchers in BBL|04, a seagull was accidentally struck by a cricket ball hit by Perth Scorchers’ batsman Adam Voges. The bird, seen lying motionless on the field, attracted concern from the players, with Rob Quiney being the first to attend to it. He carefully moved the bird to safety, and to everyone’s amazement, it soon revived and began walking along the boundary line, much to the delight of the crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
This heartwarming moment left a lasting impression in front of thousands of spectators and became a charming part of the Melbourne Stars’ lore. The introduction of Steven Seagull as a mascot was a playful nod to this unforgettable event, celebrating the bird’s resilience and adding a unique touch to the team’s mascot lineup.
When the Big Bash League started in 2011, Cricket Australia decided to have two teams based in Melbourne. With many of their players coming from the Victoria cricket team, this created an exciting rivalry between the two new teams: the Melbourne Stars and the Melbourne Renegades. This derby quickly became a highlight for cricket fans in Melbourne.
The matches between the Stars and the Renegades have drawn large crowds, with fans flocking to see the intense local rivalry at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and Docklands Stadium. In BBL|05, the first derby held at the MCG set a record, drawing a crowd of 80,883. This remains the largest attendance for any domestic cricket match in Australian history.
