Mumbai Indians is a professional cricket franchise based in Mumbai, Maharashtra, that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Founded in 2008, the team is owned by Reliance Industries through its subsidiary, Indiawin Sports. Since its inception, the Mumbai Indians have played their home games at the 33,108-capacity Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
In 2017, Mumbai Indians became the first IPL franchise to surpass $100 million in brand value. By 2019, their brand value had reached approximately ₹809 crore ($115 million), making them the most valuable IPL franchise for the fourth consecutive year.
Mumbai Indians have a remarkable record in the IPL. They won their first title in 2013 by defeating Chennai Super Kings and claimed the 2013 Champions League Twenty20 title. They secured their second IPL title in 2015, again defeating Chennai Super Kings. In 2017, they became the first team to win three IPL titles after a thrilling 1-run victory over Rising Pune Supergiant. They continued their dominance by winning a fourth title in 2019 and a fifth in 2020, solidifying their place as the most successful team in IPL history.
Currently, Hardik Pandya captains the team, with Mark Boucher as head coach, Kieron Pollard as batting coach, and Lasith Malinga as bowling coach. Rohit Sharma is the team’s all-time leading run-scorer. At the same time, Lasith Malinga holds the record for the most wickets taken in the franchise.
In September 2007, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the creation of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a Twenty20 cricket competition set to begin in 2008. By January 2008, the BCCI had revealed the owners of the eight city-based franchises. The Mumbai franchise was sold to Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) for $111.9 million, making it the most expensive team in the league. Reliance Industries, owned by Mukesh Ambani, secured the franchise rights for 10 years.
Before the 2021 IPL auction, the Mumbai Indians released several players, including Mitchell McClenaghan and Nathan Coulter-Nile. In the auction, they re-signed Coulter-Nile and added Adam Milne, Piyush Chawla, Marco Jansen, James Neesham, Arjun Tendulkar, and Yudhvir Singh Charak. Early in the season, Mumbai struggled, losing 3 of their first 5 matches, mainly due to issues with their lower middle order. They managed to win their next two games, showing improvement. Despite these efforts, they ended the season in fifth place.
In 2022, Mumbai Indians retained key players like Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah but let go of Hardik Pandya. They acquired Ishan Kishan for a record ₹15.25 crore. The season started poorly, with Mumbai losing their first 8 matches, marking their worst start in IPL history. They finished the season at the bottom of the table with only 4 wins. The 2023 season saw a turnaround as they qualified for the playoffs, thanks to solid performances from new and emerging players. They ended their campaign after losing to the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2. In 2024, Hardik Pandya returned as captain but struggled, leading Mumbai to finish last with just 4 wins.
In 2014, the Mumbai Indians struggled at the start of the IPL, losing five of their initial matches in the UAE to teams like Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals. They improved during the Indian leg with notable wins against Kings XI Punjab but remained inconsistent. Despite a strong performance from Lendl Simmons, Mumbai only managed to tie their final league match against Rajasthan Royals. Still, a crucial six by Aditya Tare helped them advance to the playoffs. They were eliminated by Chennai Super Kings in the Eliminator.
In the 2014 Champions League T20, Mumbai Indians, led by Kieron Pollard due to Rohit Sharma’s injury, had a mixed performance. They lost their opening match to Lahore Lions but won against Southern Express. Their campaign ended after a defeat to the Northern Knights. In 2015, Mumbai Indians bounced back, winning their second IPL title by defeating Chennai Super Kings. Lendl Simmons played a crucial role, and the team’s success continued with a third IPL title in 2017 and a record fourth in 2019. Notable performances included Hardik Pandya’s quick 50 and Alzarri Joseph’s record bowling figures. Despite an odd-year superstition, Mumbai Indians defied expectations in 2020, clinching their fifth title.
In the 2013 IPL season, Anil Kumble joined Mumbai Indians as chief mentor after leaving a similar role at Royal Challengers Bangalore. Ricky Ponting, struggling with his batting form, was replaced as captain by Rohit Sharma. Guided by the experienced trio of Kumble, Jonty Rhodes, and Sachin Tendulkar, the team secured their first IPL title. Mumbai had a rocky start, losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore by just one run but bounced back with wins against Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Pune Warriors. After a heavy loss to Rajasthan Royals, Ponting stepped down from all forms of cricket. Sharma’s leadership saw Mumbai claim their first IPL championship.
Mumbai Indians carried their momentum into the 2013 Champions League Twenty20, though they faced challenges early on. Needing a decisive win in their final league match against Perth Scorchers, they delivered thanks to contributions from Nathan Coulter-Nile, Dwayne Smith, and Rohit Sharma. In the final, Glenn Maxwell’s quickfire 37 helped Mumbai post a formidable total, leading to a 33-run victory and their second major title.
Mumbai Indians (MI) made significant moves during the 2010 and 2011 IPL seasons, acquiring key players like Kieron Pollard and Rohit Sharma. They dominated the 2010 season, finishing at the top of the points table, but lost the final to Chennai Super Kings. MI’s success continued in 2011, though they faltered in the playoffs against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Notably, MI secured a spot in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20, where, despite injuries to key players, they emerged victorious, winning their first major title by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final.
In 2012, MI brought in players like Dinesh Karthik and Pragyan Ojha but faced challenges with inconsistent performances and injuries. Tendulkar stepped down as captain, and Harbhajan Singh took over. MI showed resilience, finishing third in the league stage, but lost to Chennai Super Kings in the Eliminator. In the 2012 Champions League Twenty20, MI failed to secure a win, marking a disappointing end to an otherwise eventful period for the team.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Sachin Tendulkar was named the icon player for the Mumbai franchise, ensuring he would only represent Mumbai and earn 15% more than the next highest-paid player on the team. During the inaugural 2008 player auction, Mumbai acquired international stars like Sanath Jayasuriya, Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, and Lasith Malinga. Tendulkar was appointed as captain, but Harbhajan Singh took over initially due to injury. The team started poorly, losing their first four matches. It faced additional challenges when Harbhajan was suspended, leading to Shaun Pollock temporarily assuming captaincy. Despite a mid-season resurgence under Pollock, the team narrowly missed the semi-finals, finishing fifth.
2009, the IPL season was held in South Africa due to the Indian general elections. Mumbai Indians made strategic trades, acquiring Zaheer Khan and Shikhar Dhawan and adding JP Duminy to their lineup. Shaun Pollock retired and became the head coach, while Lasith Malinga returned after missing the previous season due to injury. Despite solid performances from key players like Duminy, Tendulkar, and Malinga, Mumbai struggled to find consistency, managing only five wins out of 14 matches and finishing seventh in the league.

The Mumbai Indians have consistently been among the top teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), regularly finishing among the top 10 teams in various seasons. In the 2024 season, despite a challenging year, they managed to maintain a competitive edge, showcasing their resilience and strong team dynamics. Their performances included crucial matches against the Chennai Super Kings and the Gujarat Titans. Each encounter tested their strategic depth and player skills. Still, their ability to stay in the top 10 reflected their strong franchise performance and adaptability in the ever-competitive IPL landscape.
