Punjab Kings (PBKS), formerly known as Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), is a professional cricket team based in Mullanpur, Mohali, Punjab, competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team is owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, and Karan Paul. They play their home matches at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. However, they have also used grounds in Dharamsala and Indore since the 2010 season.
Despite a strong performance in the 2014 season, where they finished as runners-up, PBKS has made only one other playoff appearance in 16 IPL seasons. The team also participated in the Champions League Twenty20 in 2014, reaching the semi-finals. The franchise rebranded as Punjab Kings in February 2021. In December 2022, they set a record by paying ₹18.50 crore (US$2.2 million) for Sam Curran, marking the highest-ever bid for a player in IPL history.
In 2007, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched the Indian Premier League (IPL), a cricket tournament using the Twenty20 format. On February 20, 2008, an auction in Mumbai sold franchises for eight cities. The team representing Punjab was purchased by Mohit Burman of the Dabur Group (46%), Ness Wadia of the Wadia Group (23%), Preity Zinta (23%), and Saptarshi Dey of the Dey & Dey Group (minor stake). They paid $76 million to acquire the franchise.
Initially named Kings XI Punjab, the team’s catchment areas included Kashmir, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana. This was reflected in the old logo, which featured the initials “K J H P H” to represent these regions.
In October 2010, following a controversy involving the BCCI and Lalit Modi, the Indian Premier League (IPL) announced that it had terminated the franchise contracts of Kings XI Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals. Both teams planned to take legal action to stay in the league.
Initially, Kings XI Punjab tried to resolve the issue through negotiations with the IPL. When these efforts failed, the team filed a case in the Bombay High Court. They claimed that the IPL was terminating the teams to favor more lucrative bidders for the 2012 season.
The Bombay High Court issued a stay on the termination order, and the legal dispute between the BCCI and the franchise was resolved in 2012.
On February 17, 2021, Kings XI Punjab was renamed Punjab Kings ahead of the 2021 IPL season. Ness Wadia explained that the name change was part of a rebranding effort after 13 seasons. He expressed disappointment that the team hadn’t won a title and hoped the new name would help the franchise start fresh. Wadia also mentioned that the name change had been planned two years earlier, but the announcement was delayed due to COVID-19.
In the 2024 season, Punjab Kings competed in their 17th Indian Premier League (IPL) season as one of the ten participating teams. They had finished 8th in the previous season’s league stage.
On May 9, 2024, after their 8th loss, Punjab Kings were eliminated from the tournament. They ended the 2024 season in 9th place, with 5 wins and 9 losses, totaling 10 points.
Harshal Patel was the season’s top wicket-taker with 24 wickets. He received a ₹10 lakh (US$13,000) cash prize along with the Purple Cap for his achievement.
In the 2023 season, Punjab Kings competed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 16th year as one of the ten teams.
Trevor Bayliss took over as head coach from Anil Kumble in September 2022. Later, in November 2022, Shikhar Dhawan was appointed as the new captain, replacing Mayank Agarwal.

In the 2024 IPL season, Punjab Kings finished 9th place, reflecting a challenging year for the franchise. They struggled throughout the league stage, securing only 5 wins out of 14 matches. One of their key matches was against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where, despite their efforts, they fell short, contributing to their overall lower position in the standings. The game against KKR highlighted some of the team’s weaknesses and was crucial in their failure to advance to the playoffs.
