Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is a professional cricket team based in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Owned by Kalanithi Maran of the SUN Group, the franchise was established in 2012, replacing the Deccan Chargers after the IPL terminated their contract. The team is coached by Daniel Vettori and captained by Pat Cummins. Their home ground is the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, which seats 39,000 spectators.
The team debuted in the IPL in 2013 and reached the playoffs, finishing fourth. They won their first IPL title in 2016 by defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final. SRH also reached the IPL finals in 2018, losing to Chennai Super Kings, and in 2024, losing to Kolkata Knight Riders. Known for their strong bowling attack and ability to defend low scores, SRH has evolved into a formidable batting side. They hold the record for the highest IPL total with 287 runs. David Warner is their top run-scorer, having won the Orange Cap thrice (2015, 2017, and 2019). Bhuvneshwar Kumar is their leading wicket-taker with two Purple Caps (2016 and 2017). The COVID-19 pandemic caused a 4% decline in their brand value to $57.4 million in 2020, reflecting the overall decrease in IPL’s brand value.
2012 Sunrisers Hyderabad was established to replace the Deccan Chargers following the latter’s financial troubles and bankruptcy. The Sun TV Network acquired the franchise, which won the bidding war with an offer of ₹85.05 crore (US$10 million) per year for a five-year deal. The Sun TV Network, based in Chennai, is one of India’s largest media companies, with 32 TV channels and 45 FM radio stations.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad team was officially announced on December 18, 2012. Their team jersey was unveiled on March 8, 2013, and their team anthem, composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, was released on March 12, 2013. The team’s logo was introduced on December 20, 2012. Initially managed by Kris Srikkanth, the team’s management later included veteran figures like Muttiah Muralitharan, Tom Moody, and V. V. S. Laxman.

They secured a thrilling one-run victory against Rajasthan Royals, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar defending 12 runs on the final ball. They then lost to Mumbai Indians but finished strongly, winning their last three league games, including a dominant chase against Lucknow Super Giants and a final win over Punjab Kings, securing second place in the table and returning to the playoffs after four years.
In the playoffs, SRH lost to Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets in Qualifier 1. They then defeated Rajasthan Royals by 36 runs in Qualifier 2 to advance to the final, where they faced Kolkata Knight Riders again.
